Column: Monument honors county's war dead

This article is written in response to the many recent articles in the Hickory Daily Record and Newton Observer about requests to remove the historic statue of a Confederate soldier. The statue has been in that spot on the grounds of the old Courthouse — now Catawba County Museum of History since it was erected in 1907. Until recent years there was never a controversy or outcry over its location or its meaning. My great-uncle George W. Rabb, a Catawba County official, Confederate soldier, and local businessman was instrumental in getting the statue erected. He solicited his friends who fought alongside him and those who felt called to contribute to the erection of the statue to remember the dead. George Rabb did a lot for Catawba County. He served as county treasurer, was an owner of Providence Mill in Maiden, and represented the county in the N.C. state legislature among other worthy achievements.

Tulsa Police Make Arrest In 2003 Rape Case Thanks To DNA Match, Funding

Tulsa Police Make Arrest In 2003 Rape Case Thanks To DNA Match, Funding Tulsa Police arrested a man this week for a rape that happened 18 years ago. Police said they recently got a DNA match to a rape kit that was collected when the crime happened in 2003. TPD said Alfred Wilson raped the woman just 16 days after he got out of prison early, for a different rape.  Wilson is in the Tulsa County Jail now, and Tulsa Police said it is because of a federal grant they received years ago to help clear out the backlog of rape kits. The arrest affidavit said the rape happened near Apache and Harvard, in an abandoned home behind TCC.

Books and music to help you find 'piece' of mind

Share Have you ever been so distracted or stressed out that you were looking to find, not complete serenity, but a mere semblance of it? While total peace of mind may have been out of the question, finding a “piece” of mind was a possibility. It is in that modest spirit characteristic of Lent that the following list of books and one album are offered for incremental improvement. by St. Alphonsus Liguori At first glance, it might seem like praying the Stations of the Cross would bring about more distress rather than relieve it. After all, wouldn’t meditating on an innocent person suffering because of our sins only increase our guilt? The paradoxical reply comes from St. Augustine, who said: “There is something in humility that strangely exalts the heart.”
