Now in her senior year at Raines High School, Amber Ferrell is about to end one phase of her life and begin another.
Girls Inc. of Jacksonville and Humana Inc. are helping her prepare. The nonprofit, which provides at-risk girls with after-school, literacy, summer and outreach programs, and the health insurer are partnering on an after-school Healthy Living course for girls. The course currently targets ninth- through 12th-graders in Girls Inc. programs in Title 1 schools that have high numbers of youth from low-income families.
The course is designed to increase girls understanding of the wide range of factors that can affect their health and help them develop the skills to take charge of their health.
