monday, and guthrie, live studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning. welcome to today on this monday morning. may is not coming quietly in seattle. the pacific northwest seeing violence. it s our top story. violent may day clashes in seattle bet downtown seattle after as-of things at them, they had to switch from crowd control into riot mode. reporter: the violence started with clashes throughout the city. some demonstrators clearly dressed and armed for a fight. quickly, the may day protests in seattle escalated. we do not want to get hurt. we don t want to hurt anybody. reporter: protesters sprinting for cover. seattle police saying they were attacked with rocks and bottles. the seattle police department works hard to protect the first amendment rights of those in our city. the demonstrators put people in jeopardy, so we had to take action. anger onha positive. reporter: as darkness began toin pushed forward, ordering demonstrators to disturb. armored o
it s difficult to get into when you re in an uncontrolled spin. this kite surfer was not able to get out of a bad situation and ended up in traffic and was hit by a car. police say drivers involved in the accident are cooperating with investigators. i want to give you perspective here. you can see, take a look at the ocean. lots of white caps. it is very windy out here. you can see it s not that far from the great highway. the southbound lanes of the great highway are once again open and that kite surfer is at the hospital with life-threatening injuries. thanks, jean. let s get right to jeff ranieri on the gusty winds. they re gusting as high as 36 miles per hour across our coastal waters. and then across san francisco, sustained winds right toward ocean beach, as high as 24 miles per hour. we expect it to stay this windy through tonight and for tomorrow. exactly where the accident did occur, our top wind gusts that i could find today on the forecast was 42 miles per hour
