City Council almost unanimously votes to tweak Safer Racine ordinance, but little change results

Bowersox The small changes to the ordinance that Public Health Administrator Dottie-Kay Bowersox was requesting had been announced Friday night and included the removal of bandanas, scarves and gaiters from the definition of “face covering.” The changes recommended by the health department passed 12-1. Alderman Henry Perez voted against the changes. Aldermen Jason Meekma and Marcus West were absent. Bowersox explained the bandanas, scarves, and gaiters were not being banned. Rather, the health department did not recommend them because they do not as closely cover the nose and face, nor do they offer as much protection as medical and cloth masks.

One City of Racine alderman objects to process of how city administrator was selected

RACINE — Alderman Henry Perez took a moment during last week’s City Council meeting to criticize the process that led to the hiring of Racine’s new city administrator, Paul Vornholt. In his criticisms, Perez strongly suggest the Vornholt benefited from personally knowing Mayor Cory Mason. Perez, however, was the sole alderman to publicly raise concerns as the rest of the council raised no objections before Vornholt’s appointment was confirmed. Perez repeatedly said that his problem was with the process and not with the person, as he considered Vornholt highly qualified for the position. “I’ve met with the gentleman, and I have no personal issues with him,” Perez said. “His experience is outstanding.”

Saga may be over: City grants contract for demolition of The Park, one of Racine's historic theaters

The Park theater s sign, untouched for more than a decade, now reads SAVE ME, visible to drivers on Washington Avenue. ADAM ROGAN, RACINE — The City Council voted Tuesday to fund the raze order that will demolish the 1928 historic landmark theater that has been the subject of dispute between the city and locals who want to preserve the building. The Park has been under a raze order for more than two years. An effort by Alderman Mollie Jones to delay the raze order by three months was unsuccessful. Aldermen Jeff Coe, Mollie Jones, Trevor Jung, Jeffrey Peterson, Mary Land and Natalia Taft voted to delay funding the raze order. Alderman Henry Perez was excused from the meeting.
