ALBANY – Congressional leaders announced an agreement Sunday night on an end-of-the-year stimulus package that would provide another round of checks to middle-class Americans and extend unemployment benefits.
On Friday, top Senate leaders said a COVID-19 stimulus deal was close, but they worked over the weekend on the $900 billion deal as a federal government shutdown loomed. The package is expected to win final approval early this week.
Maryland offered more tax relief to small businesses this month and said it would forgive $75 million in emergency loans to help them stay afloat.
Meanwhile, another round of stimulus checks would be a boost to residents who are still struggling amid a weak economy brought on by COVID and business restrictions.

ALBANY - When Gov. Andrew Cuomo ran for governor in 2010, he vowed to let a income tax surcharge on the rich expire in 2011.
But facing budget gaps, the Democratic governor reached a deal with the Republican-led Senate to keep the surcharge, but at a lower rate than had been on the books along with a small middle-class tax cut and a cut in a corporate income tax rate.
Flash forward a decade: Cuomo now faces another call for raising taxes on the wealthy as the state faces a $13 billion deficit due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the largest since he first took office.
