Expert: No-confidence motion in Kaja Kallas risks extraordinary elections

While Prime Minister Kaja Kallas (Reform), heading up a minority, Reform-only government, would not remain in office for long, a vote of no-confidence in Kallas on the part of the Center Party, the Conservative People's Party of Estonia (EKRE) and Isamaa, runs the risk of ending in an extraordinary general election at which Reform would likely strengthen its position, should the motion fail, political scientist Martin Mölder says.

WAR IN UKRAINE - In the absence of any sign the Russian forces are willing to break the siege on Mariupol, a city on the Azov Sea, efforts continue to evacuate the civilian population via humanitarian corridors. 30,000 inhabitants have so far left the city, including 300 people Moscow claims to have crossed into Russia by bus. On Wednesday, a theatre in Mariupol sheltering hundreds of civilians was hit by shelling. According to Human Rights Watch, at least five hundred civilians had taken refuge within the theatre walls. 2021 has reached an end, so perhaps it is time for reflection on a year in Estonia which has seen changes in national and local government, not to mention a new head of state. The highs of sporting success in the olympics, in tennis, swimming and athletics, all vied for our attention, as did the highs, but not in a good way, of soaring energy prices near year-end, and spikes in coronavirus rates in spring and autumn.
