At the busy intersection of South Riverside Drive and Highway 6 in Iowa City, NaNa’s African Boutique and Gift Shop occupies an inconspicuous strip of storefronts adjacent to the Village Inn. Inside, yellow and rose gold tea sets compete for attention with colorful displays of perfumes, air fresheners and necklaces. Deeper in the store, bolts of Kitenge fabric, insulated casseroles and high-heel shoes line the walls.

Iowa City business owner, landlord in court over bizarre rent dispute

At the busy intersection of South Riverside Drive and Highway 6 in Iowa City, NaNa’s African Boutique and Gift Shop occupies an inconspicuous strip of storefronts adjacent to the Village Inn. Inside, yellow and rose gold tea sets compete for attention with colorful displays of perfumes, air fresheners and necklaces. Deeper in the store, bolts of Kitenge fabric, insulated casseroles and high-heel shoes line the walls.
“For people who want jeans or a shirt, they could just go to the mall and grab something there. But if an African woman wanted her garb, some people actually have to travel all the way to Minnesota or something just to get an outfit,” said owner Naa Tackie. “So me being here is, it’s actually helpful, because it s not fair getting all these people from African countries and not having what they’re used to.” ....
