say he survived, he walked away. in fact, he refused treatment. reporter: around 3:30 thursday, a single-engine plane made an emergency landing and crashed into the south river, just a half mile from where it took off at lee airport. once it hit the water, within about a minute later, we saw a body come up. waving his hands. and then within a minute after that, the plane started going down. reporter: then a small boat picked up the 77-year-old pilot and brought him to the pier 7 marina. helped him out. get out of the inflatable zip code zodiac. and asked him if he was wearing a sweater, blanket? and he said, all i want to do is go to lee airport. curiosity is happening. it s crazy. we re not used to seeing stuff like this. even though the airport is up the street. reporter: investigators are still here on the scene. there are boats throughout the river area. and as we mipgzed early mentioned earlier, the faa and ntsb will be the ones to decide how and when to
the pilot surviving that water landing was taken to shore by a private boat that was operating nearby. now, we do know that he did not suffer any significant injury. in fact, he refused treatment from the anne arundel county medical personnel that were on the scene. we have the united states coast guard. we have anne arundel county. and it looks like natural resources police on the scene at the moment as well as the maryland state police. the airplane sank a short time after it landed in the water. it was marked by a nearby firefighting type boat, with the float. so it is difficult to see. most of it is submerged under the water. we know it is a single-engine style airplane. with only that one person on board. they were quickly able to get him on shore without significant injury, which is rather miraculous. now, at this point, they are notifying federal authorities to determine what extent they re going to do as far as their accident investigation. maryland state police is a
