winfield. one of the ten people killed in a mass shooting of a grocery store on may 15th. yesterday, the president and first lady were down in uvalde, texas where they met for hours with families of the 19 young children and two teachers who were killed in last week s school shooting. which of course came just ten days after buffalo. as biden left the church service in uvalde, he was met by a crowd of people chanting, do something. he responded by telling the crowd, we will. the president sounded a very similar note in the commence speech this weekend at university of delaware, telling graduates that the country can and must do something. let s be clear, evil came to the elementary school classroom in texas, to that grocery store in new york and far too many places where innocents have died. in the face of such forces, we have to stand stronger. we must stand stronger. we cannot outlaw tragedy, i know. but we can make america safer. but let s be honest, optimism is in sho
i have got one question. i need someone to answer. so two of you are in the hot seat. republicans are pushing wildly unpopular policies on abortion. they are pushing wildly unpopular policies on guns. yet, they are targeted to get [inaudible] from the midterms. can you explain this to me adrian? well, of course, this has to do with anytime that the president has control in the white house and congress, which of course, president biden does with this party, the opposite party attempts to do better in the mid term. they already have a lake. up and, look, you have got two key issues here, to your point that an upwards of 80 to 90% of the people support. it s a support that robe be maintained as the law of the land and they support stronger gun safety measures. so, when you have those two issues that are overwhelmingly in favor and supported by the democratic party, democrats do a lot better in the midterms. and frankly, stuff, if we can t overcome some of the deficits that we have with
if there is going to be a meaningful compromise, it is going to come out of the senate. and for me, the big sign last week was that mitch mcconnell, publicly encouraged john mccormack, who has worked on this issue in the past. to work with democrats to find a solution. i think we re going to see something on raising their age limit for gun purchases, root universal background checks, red flag laws. there really seems to be a package coming together now. and again, republicans don t move in congress without mitch mcconnell. i know all the attention is usually on donald trump, but it is mitch mcconnell that determines what republicans do in the congress. okay but hold on, talk is cheap. mitch mcconnell did not give any specifics whatsoever, but by mitch mcconnell saying hold on, i m going to encourage john cornyn to talk, and chris murphy saying i m optimistic, maybe something could happen here. adrian, by that happening. well you know what that did to chuck schumer?
control in 2018, seem to be swinging back to republicans in poll after poll. those voters do care about this issue. this is a broader issue, an issue that republicans that republicans aren t going to be able to contain likely contain the abortion issue. so i think they can see the threat here. they know that they are not instep with the american people on this issue, and they want to protect the leads that they are seeing in so many polls ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. i want to dig into how all of this impacts the midterms. if you two would stick around, carlos, adrian, we re gonna cover this on the other side of the break. stay with us! with us
