Senat USA odrzucił we wtorek zgłoszony przez Demokratów projekt reformy systemu wyborczego. Reforma, mająca m.in. ułatwić i rozszerzyć możliwości wczesnego głosowania, była jednym z priorytetów prezydenta Joe Bidena.
Projekt pod nazwą For the People Act przepadł, mimo że głosowało za nim 50 Demokratów w Senacie, którzy mają kontrolę nad izbą. Porażka jest efektem zasady znanej jako filibuster, która w praktyce umożliwia zablokowanie niektórych projektów ustaw przez 41 senatorów, nie dopuszczając do debaty nad nimi. Ostatecznie przeciwko zagłosowało 50 Republikanów.
