Egypt seeks alternatives to possible Nile water loss from Ethiopian dam

CAIRO Egypt’s Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources revealed May 2 four projects and plans to reduce water waste in the country, counter the growing need for water in the future and help mitigate the negative impact of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on its irrigation system.
Masrawy news portal quoted Mohamed Ghanem, spokesman for the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources, as saying that they have prepared for all potential scenarios, including worst-case scenarios, by adopting a good management system for every drop of water.
He noted that projects are currently underway as part of the plan, most notably the rehabilitation and lining of canals and drains at a cost of 80 billion Egyptian pounds ($5.1 million), and that the project will limit water loss and allow a better water flow.   ....

Is latest Ethiopian proposal on Nile dam talks a play for time?

CAIRO Ethiopia has proposed holding a meeting of the African Union Assembly in a bid to end the deadlock over the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) trilateral talks between Addis Ababa, Cairo and Khartoum, which have reached a dead end.
The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in an April 21 statement, “[Ethiopia] still believes that the trilateral negotiations within the framework of [mediations] led by the African Union (AU) is the best way to achieve a win-win outcome for all.”
The statement cited Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as saying, “The assumption that the negotiations have failed is not true because the talks have actually achieved tangible results, notably the signing of the Declaration of Principles.” ....
