Touring modernist homes is an annual staple at the Palm Springs Modernism Week, and the online expression is no exception. Coming in two installments as a video series, tours this year feature iconic architecture and lesser known gems in various of the city’s neighbourhoods. Examples include The Morse Residence (by Hal Levitt, 1961), The Cahuilla Hills House by O’Donnell + Escalante (by Lance O’Donnell, 2009), The Southridge Glass House (by William Cody, 1963), Trina Turk’s Ship of the Desert (by Erle Webster and Adrian Wilson, 1936), and Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s Villa Grigio (by James McNaughton, 1963). ....

Once greeted as a sensation, 1931 aluminum-clad house gets a boost for relocation at the Palm Springs Art Museum in California

After three years of travelling across the continent and sitting in a container, the iconic Aluminaire House designed by Albert Frey and A. Lawrence Kocher has found a future home on the grounds of the Palm Springs Art Museum in California. The boxy 1,100 sq. ft house was gifted to the museum by the Aluminaire House Foundation, founded by the architects and academics Michael Schwarting and Frances Campani.
“We think this is the perfect location and relationship to how the house will continue,” says Schwarting, who helped save the structure from demolition in the late 1980s. Palm Springs already boasts a number of Frey’s other landmark buildings, including the City Hall and the Tramway Gas Station. ....
