5G India update! DoT allocates spectrum for 5G trials to telecom operators

New Delhi: The Department of Telecom (DoT) has allocated spectrum to telecom operators to start 5G trials in the country, sources said.
The trials will be conducted at various locations including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Gujarat, Hyderabad, among others, according to industry sources. Telecom operators have been allocated spectrum in 700 Mhz band, 3.3-3.6 gigahertz (Ghz) band and 24.25-28.5 Ghz band across various locations, a telecom company official said.
On May 4, DoT had approved applications from Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and MTNL for conducting 5G trials without using technologies from Chinese companies. ....

NEW DELHI: Chinese telecom vendors Huawei and ZTE have not found a place in the government’s ambitious 5G trials, in a clear signal that business relations with the country’s neighbour will remain restricted, amid growing concerns around network security and prevailing tensions in diplomatic and military relations.
The trials are a precursor to 5G auctions that are expected to start late this year, or early next, and absence here means that there will be very little chance of the Chinese companies finding many takers at the time of actual network deployment, top sources told TOI. ....

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has permitted telecom service providers (TSPs), including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio Infocomm, Vodafone Idea, and MTNL, to conduct 5G trials.
As largely anticipated, Chinese tech majors such as Huawei and ZTE have not been allowed to participate in the trials.
An official statement said that the TSPs have tied up with original equipment manufacturers and technology providers Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and C-DOT. In addition, Reliance Jio Infocomm will also be conducting trials using its own indigenous technology. ....
