One year after the Black Lives Matter protests: what did they achieve? A year after people in Pennsylvania and all over the country took to the streets to protest the murder of George Floyd, has anything changed?
Those are the questions PennLive posed to activists and law enforcement officials last week. And the answer was a resounding yes.
Protesters such as political activist Shavonnia Corbin-Johnson and Kevin Maxson, with Voice for the Voiceless, say the protests mattered, and those who shouted against racism in town squares should be proud of what they achieved. Experts discuss how parenting issues impact youth violence in Harrisburg in Tuesday’s “Save Our Children” webinar

The City of Harrisburg had more homicides in 2020 than at any time in the past 30 years. And many of them involved youth.
PennLive and The Patriot-News is sponsoring “Save Our Children: A Harrisburg Community Forum” to explore reasons for the increased violence among youth and what can be done to stop it.
A panel of experts will discuss parenting in the next online forum at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26. The event will examine the special challenges of single mothers, grandparents raising small children and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on parenting. ....

Pennsylvania Capitol tightens security in response to threat of armed protests
An FBI memo warned armed protests are being planned at all 50 state Capitols from Jan. 16 through Inauguration Day.

HARRISBURG, Pa. Pennsylvania is taking steps to tighten security at its Capitol building in preparation for potential armed protests leading up to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Jan. 20.
Following the siege of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, Pennsylvania State Capitol Police said they, too, had to prepare in case of violence.
“As a result of those senseless acts of civil disobedience and violence, the Pennsylvania Capitol Police are now forced to prepare take the appropriate and necessary reactions to prevent that kind of situation from occurring here,” said Capitol Police Superintendent Joe Jacob. ....

Too many youth in Harrisburg have simply given up. They’ve lost trust in a society they see as racist, that they believe wants to crush them, handcuff them, throw them in jail or worse – see them dead in the street before they’re 18.
It’s a sad but true consensus among those who should know that too many youth in Harrisburg have no hope of ever achieving the dream that is supposed to be guaranteed to every American.
Nativity School Headmaster Lavelle Muhammad put it bluntly: too many Harrisburg youth see only two alternatives: “fight or flight . . . and they’re choosing to fight.” ....
