This great photograph was taken in 1967. That was when demolition work took place on houses around the Sankey Green area near to Bank Quay. They were bulldozed to make way for the creation of the £1 million Sankey Way carriageway. Work on the road started later in the year. It included the current subway to take pedestrians from Wellfield Street in Whitecross to Sankey Bridges on the other side of the road. Knutsford Road and Station Road, Latchford > Work will take place to install new traffic lights and repair the carriageway. The first phase will be March 29 until April 16 between 9.30am and 3.30pm and will see the footpaths closed. On April 15, the road will close between 7pm and midnight. Cockhedge roundabout, town centre > Carriageway surfacing will take place from March 29 for five weeks between 7pm and 1am. The work will take on the roundabout and for 100 metres along the following roads, A49 Lythgoes Lane; Battersby Lane; A57 Manchester Road; A49 Brick Street; A57 Midland Way. Access will be under the control of the relevant Contractor for the duration of the works. ....
