Gloucestershire fundraising hero gives the next Churn Pocket Concert

The Churn Project has revealed that fundraising hero and musician Julie Kent MBE will be giving its next Pocket Concert on Thursday.
Julia is known locally and across Gloucestershire for the many hundreds of thousands of pounds she has raised for many different charities since the tragic loss of her first child at just three years old from a brain tumour.
She was recognised in last year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Her mantra is ‘give to charity, give your time, give yourself’ and she freely acknowledges that raising money for causes across the county at first helped her and her husband to cope with their grief and subsequently has been a constant source of fulfilment. ....

The Greenwich Village of the 1960s was a carnival of music, literature, poetry, coffee houses, free love, fashion and great ethnic food. The neighborhood’s heartbeat was Bleecker Street, where one could hear the soon-to-be-discovered Bob Dylan at The Village Gate, or Joni Mitchell at The Bitter End.
1967 saw the arrival of Village Oldies on Bleecker Street, a record store offering doo-wop, disco, rock and roll, blues, garage, and rare overseas finds. This open-all-night mecca of music soon became the late-night hang for the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa, and was where an aspiring poet/singer named Patti Smith met store clerk and musician Lenny Kaye. ....

Dar Williams - End of the Summer (11 tracks) +Album Reviews

Dar Williams

Are You Out There
The End Of The Summer
Teenagers, Kick Our Butts
Better Things
Dar Williams s End of the Summer finds her following in the techno-folkie footsteps of Suzanne Vega and Rickie Lee Jones. Most of the tracks feature muscular rhythms provided by Sammy Merendino s programmed drum loops, and.
more » thickened textures provided by layers of electric and acoustic guitars. This new approach pays dividends for a singer/songwriter whose thin soprano and coffeehouse lyrics have often proven underwhelming in the past. Here she is encouraged by producer Steven Miller to cram as many words as possible into the herky-jerky verses and then release the tension with a chorus of simple statements and catchy melody. This allows her to run verbal riffs on slackers in Party Generation, on therapy in What Do You Hear in These Sounds, and on middle age in Teenagers, Kick Our Butts. Some of these riffs are witty and some aren t, but ....
