ZUPCO Now Demanding US Dollar Fares From Passengers

URBAN commuters are now being asked to fork out up to US$1 or alternatively 10 South African rands for a single trip on Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) buses.
The public transporter recently hiked its fares from $16 to $30 for buses and $24 to $50 for private kombis operating under its franchise.
Passenger Association of Zimbabwe President, Tafadzwa Goliati said charging in terms of foreign currency was not proper as many commuters were getting paid in local currency.
“There is corruption behind the issue of getting forex. Most of the employees are getting paid in Zimbabwean dollars and only a few are getting paid in forex. This shows that the government is really hunting for money,” said Goliati. ....

Commuters Criticise ZUPCO Over 100% Fee Hike

COMMUTERS have described as “unsustainably exorbitant” the hiking of public bus fares by the Zimbabwe United Passengers Company (ZUPCO) from $16 to $30 for conventional buses and $32 to $60 for kombis.
The new fares start this Monday, but passengers feel the fares were unaffordable for most of them.
On Friday, Finance Ministry secretary George Guvamatanga approved the new fares, which shot up by 100%.

ZUPCO Reviews bus fares

ZUPCO Reviews Fares With Effect From 18 January after the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development approved a request by the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company to review bus fares.
In a letter to the company, the secretary of Finance, George Guvamatanga, said: “I write with reference to a letter dated 16 December 2020, from Acting Chief Executive Officer of ZUPCO addressed to yourself and copied to Treasury on the above subject matter.
Treasury notes the proposed fares for both buses and omnibuses which is necessitated by the reduced carrying capacities due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting constraint on revenues which negatively impacts on operations. ....
