Retired police sergeant now facing criminal charges in fatal drunk driving crash, cops say Updated Apr 07, 2021; Facebook Share A retired Union County police sergeant was indicted by a Somerset County Grand Jury on several new charges stemming from an alleged drunk driving crash last summer in Raritan Borough that left a 60-year-old woman dead, authorities announced Wednesday. Kevin D. Betyeman, 56, of Bridgewater Township, was charged with reckless vehicular homicide, strict liability vehicular homicide and two charges of hindering apprehension or prosecution, according to a joint statement from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office and the Raritan Borough Police Department. The crash happened on Sept. 18, 2020 when Betyeman was driving a a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado east on Old York Road and fatally struck Celeste Andresen, 60, of San Manuel, Arizona, police said. ....

Betyeman, of Maple Street in Bridgewater, was indicted on charges of second-degree reckless vehicular homicide, third-degree strict liability vehicular homicide and two charges of third-degree hindering apprehension or prosecution, Somerset County Prosecutor Michael Robertson said. Betyeman was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado and traveling eastbound on Old York Road around 3:30 p.m. Sept. 18 when his vehicle struck and killed 60-year-old Celeste Andresen of San Manuel, Arizona, authorities said. At the time of the collision, Andresen was attempting to cross Old York Road near Woodmere Street in a well-marked crosswalk, according to the indictment. ....

Everett Holt said that around 8:46 p.m. Feb. 8, 2021, Raritan Borough police were dispatched to the area of The Liquor Barn, 1007 Old York Road near Woodmere Street on a report of a possible intoxicated driver in a Toyota Rav4. Holt said the caller continued to provide information to police dispatch at they followed the vehicle. Police were notified the Toyota was pulling into the parking lot at the QuickChek on West Somerset Street. As the vehicle pulled into the lot it ran up over the curb, police said. ....

Betyeman’s blood-alcohol concentration was above the legal limit of 0.08% BAC several hours after the collision, and he denied having consumed any alcohol or intoxicating substances when asked by police at the scene, authorities said. ....
