Iowa bill would allow residents to purchase, carry guns without a permit

Iowans would be allowed to buy or carry firearms without obtaining a permit under a GOP-backed bill approved by a state committee this week.
The bill, known as House Study Bill 254, was introduced last month and passed along party lines in an Iowa House subcommittee Monday, with two Republican state lawmakers voting for the bill and one Democratic lawmaker opposed.
If passed, the legislation would make the process of obtaining a permit to carry or acquire firearms optional. Anyone purchasing a weapon from a federally licensed gun seller would still either have to pass a federal background check or present an approved permit to carry a weapon. ....

Bill introduced in Iowa aims to allow direct shipment of native distilled spirits
One distillery owner believes if this bill is passed it could help his business grow but also help bring more jobs to distillery shops.

CLIVE, Iowa A bill introduced this legislative session is aimed at allowing native distilled spirits to be directly shipped and delivered within the state. 
This bill, House File 639, is sponsored by state Representative, Megan Jones, R- Sioux Rapids.
Jones got behind the bill after a distillery in northern Iowa, which uses corn in their distilling process, detailed how they were not legally able to send their alcoholic products to people in the state when they would call asking for it. ....

Universities air plans for in-person graduation - days after bill proposed to force them


IOWA CITY Just days after a Republican lawmaker introduced a bill that would force Iowa’s public universities to hold graduations in-person this spring after two of them already had announced plans for virtual ceremonies all three campuses announced Monday they’re now developing in-person options.
“The format will be designed to honor and celebrate the achievements of our graduates while practicing the university’s guidelines for social distancing and mandatory face coverings,” according to a University of Iowa announcement that reversing an earlier decision to keep all commencement celebrations virtual again this spring.
