WINONA, Minn. A new mural painted by a student at Winona Senior High School will encourage those who look at it to “not be ashamed of who they are.”
The acrylic painting, done by WSHS junior Julia Kopperud, features Marsha P. Johnson, a prominent figure in the Stonewall uprising of 1969. She was a transgender African-American activist and played a significant role in the LGBTQ+ community in the 1960s and 1970s. In the painting, Johnson is set against a brick wall, which pays tribute to the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in which the Stonewell riots first began. The mural also features a quote from Johnson’s close friend and fellow activist Sylvia Rivera: “We have to be visible. We should not be ashamed of who we are.”
District to hire new WSHS principal (6/2/2021)
Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) staff have selected a new Winona Senior High School (WSHS) principal. Heather Fitzloff, who has served as an assistant principal at Prior Lake High School in Savage, Minn., for nine years, is recommended to be the next leader of WSHS, according to Superintendent Annette Freiheit.
School Board members will vote on whether to approve the selection at their June 3 meeting. If approved, Fitzloff would begin on July 1.
The selection follows the current principal’s resignation. WSHS Principal Mark Anderson will step down at the end of this school year to begin in his new role, principal of Kennedy Secondary School in Fergus Falls, Minn., in July. He has worked at WAPS for more than 10 years. Prior to becoming the WSHS principal in 2016, he served as the Winona Middle School principal.
WAPS eyes $63M needs, new referendum (5/26/2021)
Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) Board members and administrators will soon discuss the possibility of pursuing another referendum for building projects. A vote could be held as early as November of this year. The conversation will follow board members having recently received a study of the district’s facilities that identified about $63 million in deferred maintenance costs.
Superintendent Annette Freiheit said at the School Board’s May 20 meeting that funding from the 2018 building project referendum will expire in 2023, and a positive vote would be needed in November 2021, February 2022, August 2022, or November 2022 to replace it.

WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-Buttons for Winona Steamboat Days 2021 are now on sale.
They’re available for $5 apiece at Kwik Trip, Severson St. Clair, Hy-Vee, and Midtown Foods. Steamboat Days Committee Vice President Jeremy Graves says the annual celebration is put on largely thanks to button sales.
“Even if you don’t come down to steamboat days but you wanted to support us, buying a button is a great way to do that,” Graves said. “All proceeds go back to those events.”
This year’s design winner is Jezabelle Wobig, who is in the 10th grade at Winona Senior High School.
