The state-contracted Optum Serve program took over COVID-19 vaccination efforts at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, offering extended hours to the public.
The county’s Public Health Branch isn’t getting out of the vaccination business entirely, Dr. Warren Rehwaldt told supervisors. The county will hold a clinic at the Department of Health and Human Services building on Wednesday. There are also clinics planned for next month, Rehwaldt said.
Vaccine hesitancy continues to be a concern, Rehwaldt said, though interest in Pfizer has peaked since the inoculation became available to pre-teens and teens.

Local school officials decided to hold dual graduation ceremonies for Del Norte High School a drive-through ceremony on June 11 similar to last year’s and a traditional ceremony at Mike Whalen Field on June 16.
The latter ceremony will come the day after California is expected fully reopen its economy after more than a year of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Del Norte Unified School District Superintendent Jeff Harris.
Del Norte Countyâs COVID-19 vaccination rates are lower than most of the rest of the state, and lower than some health officials would hope.
Dr. Warren Rehwaldt, Del Norte Countyâs public health officer, told the board of supervisors Tuesday the county has vaccinated about one third of the countyâs adults (behind the stateâs 45%).
âWeâre hopeful that we can get more,â Rehwaldt said. âWe think that the biggest news that people should think about in making this decision is the fact that we have some variants in our county. Theyâve been identified â not a lot yet, but weâve had the California variant for some time that weâve known about, and we now have the (U.K. variant), and we think that weâre going to get more.â
