How boarding school instilled my deep fear of eating in public
The growling stomach sometimes just won’t wait, but scoffing a sandwich on the Tube can be a bit of a spectacle

It was boarding school that instilled my deep fear of eating in public. As rules went, it was up there with no smoking, no drugs and no farting in chapel. (My friend Eloise ignored this last diktat as Father Richard offered his morning homily, usually letting one out at the five-minute mark as a warning. It sounded like a low, lone organ note.)
We were never told what would happen if we did risk a sandwich in the street or on the train. Would the sky fall in? Would we spontaneously combust? I didn’t dare for many years and, up until the arrival of Covid, would only chance it if very hungry or very drunk, sitting on the top deck of a bus and sneaking crumbs to my mouth from a flapjack hidden in my bag like a squirrel trying to protect his nuts from others.
