Renovations to the historic Stone Bridge in Elm Grove are expected to follow Memorial Day weekend.
WHEELING Elm Grove’s historic Stone Bridge, a crucial link on National Road, will close for renovations following Memorial Day weekend. The official detour plan for that work will take motorists further around the construction than they might expect.
West Virginia Division of Highways District 6 Engineer Tony Clark said closing the bridge located where National Road crosses Little Wheeling Creek in Elm Grove was initially expected to occur the week of May 24; however, the timeline is expected to be pushed back a week to better accommodate holiday traffic. The completion date is set for October, 2022. ....

Virginia governor to announce removal of Lee statue

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is expected to announce plans Thursday to remove one of the country’s most iconic monuments to the Confederacy, a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee along Richmond’s prominent Monument Avenue, a senior administration official told The Associated Press.
The move would be an extraordinary victory for civil rights activists, whose calls for the removal of that monument and others in this former capital of the Confederacy have been resisted for years.
“That is a symbol for so many people, black and otherwise, of a time gone by of hate and oppression and being made to feel less than,” said Del. Jay Jones, a black lawmaker from Norfolk. He said he was “overcome” by emotion when he learned the statue was to come down. ....

Bolling, Stith (1835–1916) – Encyclopedia Virginia


Early Years and Civil War
Bolling was born on February 28, 1835, in Lunenburg County, the son of John Stith Bolling and Mary Thomas Irby Bolling. He grew up on his father’s farm and was educated at Mount Lebanon Academy before moving to Richmond at age nineteen to become a clerk in a store. The following year he and two brothers founded a wholesale grocery and commission business, which they operated until the summer of 1861. On May 9, 1860, Bolling married Cornelia Scott Forrest, of Lunenburg County. They had three daughters and one son.
On June 7, 1861, Bolling enlisted as a sergeant in the Lunenburg Light Dragoons, which became Company G of the 9th Virginia Cavalry Regiment. He was commissioned a lieutenant on April 28, 1862, and promoted to captain on January 17, 1863. Later that year he was detailed to Brigadier General William Henry Fitzhugh Lee‘s staff as acting assistant adjutant general, and in 1864 he was detached to brigade headquarters.
