Grace Dorset was a doer and when it came to fighting some of the country s worst social problems, she walked the talk.
The 85-year-old died on Wednesday last week after a battle from an
illness and was laid to rest at Pukepoto Urupa in Rotorua on Sunday.
Dorset was described as a quiet achiever who didn t let on exactly how much she contributed to society.
But given her role in social services in the city, it was only fitting she was awarded an ONZM for services to Māori in 2012. ....

Police have revealed a gunman unexpectedly came out of his house brandishing a firearm moments before he was shot by officers.
Counties Manukau district commander superintendent Jill Rogers revealed at a press conference this morning that attempts to negotiate with the man had proved unsuccessful when suddenly he appeared outside his Papatoetoe home.
The male unexpectedly exited from the house. He was still holding the firearm and brandishing it around and continuing to display his erratic behaviour, at which time he was shot by police, said Rogers. ....

Dept slams claims virus came from Thailand
THAILAND: The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation yesterday (Feb 24) dismissed news reports suggesting Thailand was the source of the COVID-19 pandemic, saying it had conducted tests on various types of wildlife claimed to have contained the virus that causes the disease and found the claims were untrue.

A man accused of killing his associate with a cricket bat says the victim came at him wielding a pair of scissors with a look of evil on his face.
John Kenneth Collins (39) has been charged with the murder of 45-year-old Brent Andrew Bacon on February 4 in 2019 and is appearing before the High Court at Dunedin.
The defendant took the rare step of opting to give evidence this morning, during which he told the jury of six men and six women he only attacked the victim because he believed his life was in danger. ....
