What makes Virginia unique?
There are many answers to this question, from its natural beauty to its history to its people. But I would like to praise a specific attribute of Virginiaâs in this column: its constitutional limit of one consecutive term for governors.
No other state currently imposes the limit on its governor found in Section V of our state constitution: âHe shall be ineligible to the same office for the term next succeeding that for which he was elected.â
Governors can run for election and serve again four years after completing their terms, and some have, such as former Gov. Mills Godwin in 1965 and in 1973. Former Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) is attempting to do so now. Nevertheless, limiting them to one term in a row provides a crucial check on executive power in Virginia.

Arlington wants to deploys speed cameras and to lower speed limits in residential and business districts below 25 miles per hour.
Those are among a list of state legislative priorities the Arlington County Board unanimously approved on Saturday before the upcoming session of the Virginia General Assembly in Richmond.
Board member Christian Dorsey said at Saturday’s meeting that speed cameras allow for equitable law enforcement while reducing public interaction with the police.
“We want to reduce the amount of times that potential conflicts can turn into something that’s unintended,” Dorsey said.
“Automated ticket enforcement has the potential to improve safety… and further advance equitable outcomes by reducing or eliminating race-based disparities in speed enforcement,” the county said its legislative priority list.
Creating a unified brand and fare policy for the Washington region s commuter rail systems could help reduce travel times and improve economic development opportunities over the next few decades, according to a new report released Thursday.
The Greater Washington Partnership, with support from leaders of Amtrak, state departments of transportation, and existing commuter rail systems, released its âCapital Region Rail Visionâ report Thursday, outlining its plan to seamlessly interconnect Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Colombia. Â
During a virtual news conference, Joe McAndrew, vice president of the partnership, said one of the key issues for the region is adapting the regionâs transportation network to its growing size.
