Iowa House passes amendment stating the Iowa Constitution doesn t protect abortion

Democrats said the amendment could endanger women s access to birth control and in-vitro fertilization and block the right to have an abortion even in the cases of rape, incest or when a woman s life is in danger. They introduced changes to the amendment during Wednesday s debate, but Republicans voted them down. Without state constitutional protections for abortion, Democrats said Republicans would be emboldened to try to ban the procedure. Previous restrictions Republicans approved   like a 72-hour waiting period to receive an abortion and a ban on abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected  have been struck down by the courts under the Iowa Constitution.

Hurting Lethbridge business owners voice concerns over COVID-inspired shutdowns

LETHBRIDGE, ALTA. Many southern Alberta business owners who vowed to break COVID-19 restrictions this week were more reserved Monday, instead choosing to book future appointments and speak with clients, instead of violating health orders. That was until late Monday afternoon, when Lethbridge police announced one business had been charged with non-compliance of the Public Health Act for contravening a public health order. As many as 30 small businesses in Lethbridge had threatened to reopen Monday even though the Alberta government extended restrictions in the province until at least Jan. 21. A week ago, Lethbridge gym owner Lee Mein posted a video on his Facebook page that it was “time to take a stand,” adding he was opening the Canadian Marshal Arts Centre on Jan. 11.

Hein, Zumbach discuss legislative issues with Maquoketa Valley, West Delaware boards

Funding for mental health services, additional money for schools and what to do about enrollment brought superintendents and school board members from Maquoketa Valley and West Delaware community school districts together with area legislators for a recent Zoom meeting. Iowa Rep. Lee Hein, R-Monticello, and Iowa Sen. Dan Zumbach, R-Ryan, discussed those issues ahead of the beginning of the 2021 legislative session in Des Moines. Both legislators agreed that the state coffers are in better shape than first thought. “It’s not as gloomy as I thought it would be,” Zumbach said. “We are in a position to be responsible with our budgeting and are in a position to do what we have done for the last several years, and that’s to do education first, give it the biggest piece of the pie.”
