St. Johns celebrates 200th anniversary with time capsule, historian


For most of its existence, St. Johns County has been a poor, rural, sparsely populated area, historian Thomas Graham told a crowd at the county government headquarters on Wednesday.
But that has changed. In recent years, the county has found itself among the ranks of the wealthiest and fastest-growing counties in the state.
Graham s speech was part of the time capsule celebration at the county government headquarters, which marked the county s 200th anniversary. 
Graham shared some highlights of the county s evolution and its early key industries, such as agriculture. 
We don t realize it today, but before the Civil War and for a few years after the Civil War, St. Johns County was the center of orange production in the United States, Graham said. And we shipped thousands of barrels of oranges north each year from our county. Unfortunately, freezes have beaten back the orange culture in our county. ....

Florida Trust hosting history events at Lincolnville Museum


The Florida Trust for Historic Preservation is hosting events at Lincolnville Museum, 102 M. L. King Ave., in celebration of National Historic Preservation Month.
6 p.m. Friday, May 21: Evening of storytelling and song with author Greg Estevez and Beaufort s Hallelujah Singers connecting Edisto, South Carolina, to Edisto, Florida, with Gullah heritage at Lincolnville Museum or online. Tickets are $50 to attend and $10 to attend virtually.
9 a.m. Saturday, May 22: Walking tour of Lincolnville starts at Lincolnville Museum. Tickets are $25. The Lincolnville Museum open house is from 10 a.m. to noon.
7 p.m. Thursday, May 27: Dr. J. Michael Francis will give a lecture on Free and Enslaved: Black Society in Spanish Florida, 1513-1821 at St. Augustine Art Association, 22 Marine St. The VIP reception is 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Lincolnville Museum. Lecture tickets are $10 to view virtually, $25 to attend in-person and $50 for pre-event reception and the lecture. ....
