WHMI 93.5 Local News : BAS Board President: State Sets Mask Mandate, Not School Boards

April 28, 2021
By Tom Tolen / [email protected]
At its regular meeting Monday night, the Brighton Board of Education heard many parents — including several who live in the Howell and Pinckney School districts - speak on the topic of requiring that children wear protective masks in school.
The board is back to a virtual format in line with state mandates; therefore, those who commented did so virtually. A total of 21 people commented - 13 of them opposed to the mandate requiring that Brighton children wear masks in the classroom. Those opposed to the requirement gave detailed reasons why they are opposed, such as their child having a medical problem that made wearing the masks difficult. Others who commented were either supportive of the school district and the steps it has taken to ensure that kids wear masks in school, or addressed the board on other issues. ....

WHMI 93.5 Local News : Board Hears Teacher Grievance, Delays Decision

April 14, 2021
By Tom Tolen / [email protected]
After about 45 minutes of discussion, the Brighton Board of Education took no action Monday night on a Level III grievance by the Brighton Education Association. The grievance was filed on behalf of high school teacher Aaron Walter, who was approved and assigned to teach a credit recovery class in 6th hour for two semesters — comprising a full year.
Walter taught the first semester and assumed from the contract he and an administrator signed that he would be teaching the class again in the second semester. But when the second semester rolled around, there was no class. According to BEA President Barry Goode, the snafu occurred due to a clerical error by a staff secretary that was not caught. ....

The mission of senior care facilities to ease residents’ twilight years turned into a nightmare after state leaders failed to adequately separate COVID-19 patients from healthy individuals.
When COVID-19 started roiling through nursing homes last winter, Cecelia Payne had more
at stake than most. And her worst fears soon became reality. Her husband, Arnold Brown, 78, died of COVID-19 on April 24, 2020, at McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mt. Clemens after being transferred there from the Martha T. Berry Medical Care Facility.
Brown, a former manufacturing tooling engineer before a stroke disabled him, had been in the Mt. Clemens skilled nursing facility since 2006. His roommate at the medical care facility died, as well. “I really do feel that he got it from a staff member,” Payne, of Macomb Township, says of her husband’s illness. “Especially when I learned his roommate had it, too.” ....

Alabama football adjusting well to Bill O'Brien, Doug Marrone

Happy Tuesday, everyone. You probably saw Baylor whip Gonzaga in surprising fashion to take the NCAA Tournament title last night. The Bears were just too athletic and physical for the Zags to handle. Congratulations to them on their first ever title, especially former Alabama enrollee Jared Butler, who walked away with the Most Outstanding Player award. What might have been, eh?
The Fail Room was featured on a Jeopardy question last night.
Aaron Rodgers was a little stiff as the host. He reportedly wants to be a permanent in the role and believes he can juggle it with NFL duties, but I’m not seeing it. ....
