Six new cases, Premier demands vaccine 'transparency'


 
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has called for the Federal Government to release vaccination figures daily to give the public confidence in the vaccine rollout.
It comes as Queensland records six new cases in the past 24 hours - all detected in hotel quarantine and acquired overseas.
Ms Palaszczuk said there were now 73 active cases in hospitals., 57 of those overseas-acquired cases. Twenty-six of those are from Papua New Guinea.
There were 5396 vaccinations in the past 24 hours.
The Premier offered her condolences to the family of a Papua New Guinea man, 77, who died from COVID-19 complications in the Redcliffe Hospital on Monday.
Ms Palaszczuk said National Cabinet would meet on Friday and front and centre would be the nation s COVID-19 vaccine rollout. ....

Annastacia Palaszczuk says Australia should keep borders SHUT until vaccine rollout is completed


Australia shouldn t open up the borders to any more countries until the national coronavirus vaccine rollout in completed, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says.
The state government is in talks with airlines to restart direct flights from New Zealand to regional tourism destinations as soon as the travel bubble opens on April 19.
Ms Palaszczuk is keen for cross-Tasman tourism to resume, but she s wary about opening the international borders to more countries.

Coronavirus: Former governor of Papua New Guinea has died of COVID-19 in Australia.


A former governor of Papua New Guinea has died of coronavirus in Australia.
Businessman Malcolm Kela Smith, 77, died in Queensland after being flown to Australia with the virus on March 28.
He spent more than a week in ICU at Redcliffe Hospital, north of Brisbane, before passing away on Monday.

The former Australian Defence force member owned businesses including Pacific Helicopters, and set up a charity for underprivileged children in Australia, the Kela Foundation.

PNG aviator and politician Malcolm 'Kela' Smith remembered after dying from COVID-19 complications in Queensland hospital


Ms Palaszczuk described Mr Smith s death as tragic and offered condolences to his family.
He was a very sick gentlemen … I want to thank our staff who looked after him and took care of him, she said.
Mr Smith had been medevaced from PNG on March 28 and was being treated in the intensive care unit at Redcliffe Hospital, north of Brisbane.
Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said Mr Smith was transferred as an urgent aeromedical retrieval .
He wasn t infectious at that time, which is why he was treated at Redcliffe ICU, Dr Young said.
I m very grateful to the staff who managed him to the best of their ability to give him that chance but unfortunately he was very, very ill when he was transferred. ....
