Paraguay church to see no holiday pilgrims for first time in century

Slideshow ( 5 images ) ASUNCION (Reuters) - The people of Paraguay will honor their patron saint this year online or in neighborhood parishes, as pandemic rules prevent an annual pilgrimage to a sacred cathedral for the first time in a century. The sprawling white Caacupé Cathedral, surrounded by palm trees, is widely seen as the spiritual capital of the land-locked South American nation. For more than a century it has attracted nearly a million visitors annually around the holidays, culminating on Dec. 8. But this year officials in Paraguay have largely restricted access to Caacupé, 50 kilometers (30 miles) outside the capital Asuncion, to stave off a spike in contagions.

Ramon Gonzales, founder of Miracle on 31st Street, dies from COVID-19 complications

Ramon Coronado Gonzales, the man renowned for bringing Christmas miracles to children in South Tucson for almost a half century, passed away Thursday, Dec. 17, due to complications from COVID-19. Gonzales was the founder of Miracle on 31st Street Christmas party, an event that grew from a backyard barbecue on Christmas Eve into a seasonal party that gifted toys to 10,000 children annually. “Outside of his family, the party was the most important thing in his life. He started doing it with his mother and when she passed on, he continued with it. It is what he lived for,” said Gonzales’ son, William.
