Died: April 16, 2021. MIKE Mitchell, who has died aged 77, was a guitarist whose solo on The Kingsmen’s version of Richard Berry’s song, Louie Louie, helped define a sound that helped shift rock and roll out of the school hop and into infinitely rawer territory. The song was recorded by the teenage band in a three-track studio, where, according to Mitchell in a 1999 interview with John Broughton on Casey Radio, Melbourne, Australia, the Kingsmen’s one-take wonder of Louie Louie and two more songs took an hour all in, costing a cool $36 to make. The result saw Berry’s three-chord construction ingested with new life as a bratty piece of almost incoherent bubblegum trash that became an inspiration for every garage band in town. Despite the messiness of the recording, it was released as a single in 1963, and eventually spent several weeks at number two in the U.S. charts.

The venue, called the Burnside Hotel since the late 19th century, has just been renamed to mark all the work that has gone into it, its owner said. It has also recruited an extra 13 full-time members of staff, bring the total employed at the hotel to 80.
Owner Richard Berry said: “When I bought it in 2014, I could see that it was a fantastic building in a great location.”

A decades-long backlog of untested rape kits in the Albuquerque area is no more. Finally, a bit of justice for some – and a system in place to ensure this never happens again. And that’s important because many of the cases involving the kits that languished for years will never see justice (the statute of limitations has expired, victims died or decided to not proceed with charges, no suspect was identified, etc.)
The backlog came to light around four years ago, when Mayor Tim Keller was state auditor. After learning of the backlog, his team dug in and issued a report on the 5,400 or so untested rape kits across the state – 75% from Albuquerque. Then-Mayor Richard Berry got two grants to start testing the kits and now, under Keller, the backlog is gone.
