Arthur Allan Thomas trial: Jurors fail to reach a verdict


Thomas thanked the judge before being released on bail.
He left the court, flanked by supporters, and did not comment to journalists waiting outside.
The case is coming back to court in August when it is expected the Crown will indicate whether it will pursue a retrial.
Now aged 83, Thomas faced a two-week trial at the Manukau District Court, accused of four historical charges of indecent assault and one of rape.
He was twice wrongfully convicted for the 1970 murders of Jeannette and Harvey Crewe. After spending nine years in prison and following a Royal Commission of Inquiry, he was awarded almost $1 million in compensation. ....

Oliver Sutherland was an activist during the 1970s who helped to identify and publicise racism and the shocking treatment of children in New Zealand s justice system. The work he did with others, led to the establishment of the national duty solicitor scheme.

Homeless for about a year, the police officers who arrest him make him walk to the station, saying he smells too bad to get in their car.
When he gets to the station, they strip him out of his clothes and make him take a shower. ....

Fenland's first community fridge opens in March

March deputy mayor Ray Jack opened Fenland’s first ever community fridge located at FACT’s Community Hub on Martin Avenue.

The doors were officially opened at Fenland’s first ever community fridge by the deputy mayor of March Ray Jack.  
Located at FACT’s Community Hub on Martin Avenue, the scheme was created to stop food surplus going to waste, as well as providing food to residents most in need.
