City Council members were stunned last week by the news that electric scooter rental company Bird hoped to bring 50 vehicles to Mexico.
“It sounds a little dangerous and off the wall,” chairman pro tem Vicki Briggs.
The company provides rechargeable stand up scooters that can travel at speeds up to 17 miles per hour. Riders pay electronically and are charged per minute, dropping the scooters where their trip ends. ....

“It’s been a normal year,” he told the City County on Monday.
COVID-19 caused a spike in unemployment that exceeded the levels seen during the recession. But the damage was temporary. And Runge counts more positives than negatives when it comes to the city’s economic state as the year comes to a close.
The average wage is up, both on an annual and hourly basis. Meanwhile the unemployment rate has dropped to 3 percent, down from its peak of 10.3 percent in April and May, as the pandemic roiled the economy.
“Some good things have happened,” Runge said.
The average annual wage is $37,289 as of 2019, up from $36,336 the year before. ....

Bean Excavating & Dirt Work remains on site at the former A.P. Green Firebrick complex, completing salvage operations.
The work is being done on land owned by Abacus Industrial Holdings out of Scottsdale, Arizona. According to Mexico economic development director Russell Runge, the excavating company is tearing down all factory buildings on the property. ....
