Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says work being done on initiatives like the Māori Health Authority, Corrections and Oranga Tamariki predate the report He Puapua and aren’t part of some secret agenda.
National Party leader Judith Collins says the report, which outlines potential responses to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, is already being acted on by Labour despite only just being made public under an Official Information Act request.
She says many of the recommendations are a step too far and will create separate government systems along racial lines.
We do need to ensure that the MÄori Health Authority has a view and a say in the delivery of those services for MÄori because we haven t done that to date and we haven t reached MÄori as a result to date, Ardern said.Â
Collins also tried to reignite one of the most contentious standoffs in our recent history, the foreshore and seabed debate, asking Ardern to rule out full or partial governance of it to MÄori.

OPINION: Judith Collins made no effort to hide the cat-with-the-cream expression on her face when she answered journalists’ questions after a National Party meeting in Auckland on Saturday. She had just delivered a speech that rolled a grenade under Jacinda Ardern – with an apparent confidence that it would go off with an almighty bang and cause an awful lot of damage to the Labour Government. The
difficulty with translating the Treaty partnership into the
realities of parliamentary rule is that at best, Maori have
been treated only as co-pilots, still flying on captain’s
orders. Yet if we have learned anything in the past 180
years, it is that the Maori passengers on board will reach
their destination only if and when Maori are at the
controls. Ultimately, true equality means more than just
having an input, however valued, into someone else’s
decisions.
Both major parties have struggled to
deliver on the Treaty’s Article 2 vision of equality. For
decades, National has chosen instead to play on fears about

The Labour/Greens government support is down 2.5% points to 55% in April. Support for the Labour Party dropped 4% points to 41.5% in April (its lowest level of support since February 2020 prior to the pandemic) while support for the Greens was up 1.5% points to 13.5%.
