KZMU News: Friday February 5, 2021 Today on the news, representatives from local nonprofits undertake the homeless point in time count. The count is meant to help communities better understand the needs in their area as well as access state and federal funding to help address homelessness. We hear from people who have experienced homelessness in Moab, and from those who work throughout the year on emergency resources. And, our Weekly News Reel! where we hear from local newspaper reporters and editors about their latest stories in our area. Carter Pape at The Times-Independent has a follow-up piece about beloved local educator Margaret Hopkin (10:00), who passed away in December. Rally on the Rocks, an annual UTV event that has sparked heated debates between event organizers and county officials over the past two years, will not take place in Grand County this spring. âFollowing advice from our legal team, the entirety of the Rally will be held in San Juan County,â reads a statement on the eventâs website. Scheduled for May 11 through 15, the event will be headquartered off Highway 191, less than a mile south of the border between Grand and San Juan counties at the Dixie 4WD auto repair shop and the Moab Off Road Compound, a rental accommodation geared toward off-road enthusiasts. ....
The different scenarios and circumstances that fall under the term âcampingâ are broad and diverse, from relatives attending a family reunion parked in RVs on side streets for a weekend to van-life devotees spending a season parked in a friendâs driveway. However, when the Grand County Planning Commission and County Commission discussed a new county ordinance explicitly barring camping, there was concern that it could impact Grand County workers who live in their cars because of the lack of affordable housing options. County staff assured commissioners that the intent of the ordinance is to give code enforcement the teeth it needs to be able to address nuisances and people illegally renting out their property as overnight accommodations to tourists, not to pursue residents struggling with housing insecurity. ....
