Blessings in a Backpack of Waukesha County, a local affiliate of a national nonprofit food program, has opened a new office in Waukesha.
The office, at 2010 Springdale Road next to Habitat for Humanity of Waukesha County’s administrative offices, is the organization’s first physical location.
The program provides food on the weekends for school children who might otherwise go hungry.
The Waukesha affiliate, which has been in operation for eight years, was recently named the fifth national chapter. Longtime nonprofit leader Nancy Major was also recently named its managing director. She previously held executive leadership roles with local and regional affiliates of national nonprofits, including Special Olympics, United Cerebral Palsy, Safe Babies Healthy Families of Waukesha County and Variety-the Children’s Charity of Wisconsin. ....

Mayor in State of the City: Departments moved city forward in ‘20, big projects set for 2021

Mayor John Stanforth gives his State of the City address virtually during Thursday’s Wilmington City Council meeting.
John Hamilton | News Journal
WILMINGTON “2020 was the year of perseverance,” said Mayor John Stanforth at the beginning of his State of the City address.
At Thursday’s Wilmington City Council meeting, Stanforth recapped the oddities of 2020, the accomplishments of city departments, and future plans for Wilmington during the address.
“Who would have predicted wearing a mask would become normal, or Zoom no longer a phrase from a comic book, but a new way to hold meetings,” he said. “Or the new dress code for meetings is a dress shirt or blouse with sweatpants and slippers. Who knows what changes in our lifestyle 2021 will bring?” ....

A Guide To Psychedelics' Influence On Modern Religion

RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE
Religious experiences can be had by many methods; meditation, fasting, feats of endurance, the list goes on.  One method in particular, however, has proven consistently reliable – psychedelics.  In the 60s, a generation of young people were gifted direct religious experiences thanks to the discovery of LSD.  This led to a fascination with Eastern religions, such as Buddhism and Hinduism, that had maps for such experiences.  Many uncovered the mystic strands in the faiths of their culture of origin.  Many questions arose.  Why did these substances evoke religious experiences? Could they have played a role in the development of religion?  If so, why was this strand of psychedelic gnosis ultimately lost? ....

Effects of Lakewood Ranch jewelry store robbery linger | East County

Long removed from the Nov. 15, 2016 burglary that basically ruined their Lakewood Ranch business lives, Murray Margolis and his wife, Ardene Chodosh, still carry an anger that never figures to end.
It was on that day The Family Jeweler at 8342 Market Street in Lakewood Ranch was cleaned out by a three-man team of sophisticated burglars who have achieved legendary status in Florida among law enforcement officials.
The suspected thieves, William Anthony Granims, Michael Ornelas and Matthew Petruccelli, finally were arrested May 19, 2018 for a burglary in progress in Chicago, and were later tied to as many of 23 Florida burglaries. They were eventually delivered to Hernando County, where they are suspected of committing 10 jewelry store burglaries. Hernando County called a press conference Dec. 12, 2019 to announce they were charging the men with multiple counts of burglary, although a trial date has yet to be set although county officials say they expect a trial in Janua ....

Meadville reveals months-old 'suspicious' data incident [The Meadville Tribune, Pa.]

Meadville reveals months-old ‘suspicious’ data incident [The Meadville Tribune, Pa.]
Dec. 11 In October, when Meadville City Council unanimously approved more than doubling what the city was spending on computer security and network management, City Manager Andy Walker said the investment was worth it given “the constant headlines with respect to cyber attacks and ransomware and malware.”
“We just found ourselves in a position of vulnerability that was uncomfortable and I think we really need to beef up our efforts,” Walker said. “We have underinvested for quite some time in our network.’
The next day, Walker’s forecast proved prescient when city staff learned of what Walker termed a “data incident.” ....
