PCP Vice President Dr. Maricar Limpin warned that taking the drug despite the lack of evidence to support claims that it is supposedly effective against COVID-19 will only give people false security.
“Ang aming posisyon diyan (Our position in that) is we still have to wait for the results of the clinical trials because that will be our evidence on whether we can give it for COVID-19 or not,” Limpin said in a TeleRadyo interview Friday, April 30.
President Duterte has ordered the conduct of clinical trials in the country on the use of the drug as a potential treatment against COVID-19. ....

Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship Jose Ma. “Joey” Concepcion III said that the private sector would prioritize donating 500,000 AstraZeneca doses to the government if deliveries from the COVAX global facility to the Philippine government are delayed.
The Philippines has already received more than 500,000 AstraZeneca doses from the facility, which were used to inoculate medical frontliners. The second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine should be given four to 12 weeks after the first.
Mr. Concepcion leads the Dose of Hope initiative which helped procure AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines through tripartite agreements with the private sector and local governments. Of the doses bought by businesses, half are to go to their employees first and the second half will be donated to the government. ....

Gadon dares Duque to impose price control on controversial Remdesivir

A lawyer on Wednesday, April 28, challenged Health Secretary Francisco Duque to recommend the imposition of price caps on Remdesivir if he is convinced that the World Health Organization was wrong in declaring the reported anti-coronavirus disease (COVID-19) drug as “ineffective” against the deadly ailment.
Lawyer Larry Gadon aired the challenge even as he prepared for the filing of criminal complaints against pharmaceutical firms, distributors and retailers of Remdesivir that have taken advantage of the current pandemic to overprice the drug.
Gadon, together with House Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta (1SAGIP Partylist) and Rep. Michael Defensor (Anakalusugan Partylist), has started gathering evidence to support the filing of charges. ....

House resolution honors MB's Jun Icban for contribution to PH journalism – Manila Bulletin

A resolution seeking to honor the former press secretary and veteran newsman Crispulo Julio “Jun” Icban, Jr. has been filed at the House of Representatives.
In filing House Resolution No. 1695, AnaKalusugan Party-list Representative Michael Defensor sought to honor Icban for his “lifetime of contributions to Philippine Journalism.”

“He has led a productive life, especially in the field of journalism,” Defensor stated in his resolution.
“His contributions in the field of journalism extended beyond the workplace,” the lawmaker also said.
In his resolution, Defensor cited Icban’s humble beginnings at the University of the Philippines where he served as editor-in-chief of The Philippine Collegian. He graduated with a degree in English, magna cum laude. ....
