The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) and Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) are working together on an 18-mile portion of the busy interstate between Kaycee and Buffalo where the “second highest rate of vehicle-deer collisions” occur in the state, according to the Oil City News. The project, which will improve wildlife crossing for mule deer primarily from the Upper Powder River herd and the Pumpkin Buttes herd, will be funded by several donations and grants, including a $100,000 donation from the Knoblock Family Foundation, a $125,000 grant from Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund and another $1,600 from Wyoming artist Jenny Reeves-Johnson. ....

BUFFALO â There are still six months remaining in the three-year study to better understand why the population of the Upper Powder River mule deer herd is in decline, but already biologists have identified concerning trends. Statewide, mule deer populations have been on the decline. Biologists have identified the Upper Powder River herd, which ranges in Hunt Areas 30, 32, 33, 163 and 169 south and west of Buffalo, as one of the high concerns. âWe just have way less deer than we used to,â said Cheyenne Stewart, the Sheridan Region wildlife coordinator for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. âWe were trying to look at what we are missing that could explain why the population isnât rebounding.â ....
