Dallas Music Venues Say They're Listening to the CDC, Not to Gov. Abbott


Not all Texans were rejoicing at the chance to show their faces in public again after Gov. Greg Abbott announced last week that businesses won t be required to enforce face masking or limit their capacity come  March 2. Abbott’s announcement set Twitter ablaze with backlash, including the trending hashtag RIPTexas, while President Biden accused Abbott (and Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves, who made a similar call) of “Neanderthal thinking.”
One of the most widespread bits of criticism over Abbott’s decision was that while businesses may still require patrons to wear masks the burden to reinforce COVID safety policies falls on employees, making them subject to harassment from anti-maskers, a recurring trend in 2020 when private businesses implemented mask requirements before any official mandates were in place. ....

The Beishan Broadcast Wall, once a propaganda tool, is now a popular tourist attraction.
On a hilltop on the northwestern tip of Taiwan s Kinmen Island stands the Beishan Broadcast Wall, a towering concrete structure dotted with 48 loudspeakers.
Decades ago, this sea-facing propaganda machine blasted songs by Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng Asia s late eternal queen of pop across a 10-kilometer stretch of sea, her music aimed at residents of the mainland Chinese city of Xiamen. ....

Charles E. Carlson
Charles “Chuck” Carlson, age 88 of Northfield, passed away surrounded by the love of his family on Saturday evening, January 16, 2021, at Cannon Valley Suites of the Northfield Retirement Community.
Charles Edward Carlson was born October 23, 1932, on the family farm in Douglas County near Spruce Center, Minnesota, to Adin and Viola (Nelson) Carlson. Chuck graduated from Alexandria High School in 1950. He worked at the family farm until enlisting in the Army in 1953. He served two years in Germany. After receiving his honorable discharge Chuck returned to Minnesota. On November 6, 1955, he married Marilyn Johnson at Compton Church in Ottertail County. The couple lived in Babbitt for 13 years where Chuck worked in the mines. He attended community college and became a nursing home administrator. They moved to Northfield in 1968, and Chuck served as the administrator for the Odd Fellows Home (now Three Links). In 1977, they moved to Blue Earth, ....
