12:25 EDT, 10 May 2021 A court has heard the moment former Premier League star Dalian Atkinson was kicked with substantial force moments after he was tasered by police officers. David Lewis, Meadow Close resident, told jurors that a policeman was running away from the ex-Aston Villa striker as fast as he could moments before Atkinson was tasered in 2016. Mr Lewis described the scene in detail, explaining Atkinson had staggered before his pursuit of a police officer saw him tasered for more than 30 seconds and allegedly kicked in the head. A statement from Mr Lewis wife, Janet, then went on to recall in detail the moment she witnessed a male moving as though a footballer [was] kicking a football with substantial force. ....
11:50 EDT, 7 May 2021 Ex-Aston Villa star Dalian Atkinson went down like a ton of bricks when police shot him with a taser, a witness told a murder trial today. Julia Shilton told jurors she witnessed the moment PC Benjamin Monk pulled out a stun gun on the former footballer in a street in Telford, Shropshire, in 2016. Monk, 42, then delivered five or six kicks to Mr Atkinson as he lay on the floor, Ms Shilton told jurors. Pc Mary Ellen Bettley-Smith, Monk s police partner and lover, who was also at the scene, is accused of hitting Atkinson with her police baton. Ex-Premier League star Atkinson, 48, later died of cardio-respiratory arrest in hospital. ....

The Crown alleges West Mercia Pc Benjamin Monk murdered the ex-Aston Villa star by kicking him in the head intending serious harm, while the officer s then partner, Pc Mary Ellen Bettley-Smith struck blows with a baton out of anger. Jean Jeffery-Shaw told Birmingham Crown Court she was so ‘traumatised’ after watching the police ‘kill a man’ outside her bedroom window that she was forced to consult her GP. It comes after a statement written by Mr Atkinson s father Ernest before his own death told the murder trial he warned police his son was not in his right mind on the night he was Tasered. ....

The jury at Birmingham Crown Court was told West Mercia Police Constable Benjamin Monk denies the murder and manslaughter of the 48-year-old former footballer, who also played for Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday. Opening the Crown’s case against the 42-year-old officer, who was charged after a three-year inquiry into Mr Atkinson’s death in 2016 in Telford, Shropshire, prosecution counsel Alexandra Healy alleged the ex-footballer was tasered for 33 seconds, more than six times the standard five-second phase. ....
