CNG threatens boycott of MultiChoice over exclusion of North

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has threatened to organise and enforce a boycott of MultiChoice services in the Northern region, as it accused the owners and operators of DSTV, Nigeria’s leading television broadcast signal distributor of lopsidedness against northern based media stations.
The group said it would not hesitate to embark on the boycott, unless MultiChoice shows readiness to embrace content diversity towards national growth and development, which will be of benefit to the North.
The group said in MultiChoice’s nearly three decades of operation in Nigeria, raking in billions of naira in revenue every year from northern and southern individuals and corporate organisations, it has remained steeped in gross favouritism towards southern-owned TV companies, while being insensitive to the need for inclusion of northern-owned TV and radio organisations on its premium DSTV platform. ....

Court declines to lift order against ISPs on Multichoice case

The Court of Appeal on March 10 declined to grant Safaricom Plc a request to set aside an interim order issued last year by the High Court directing Kenya’s largest mobile communications operator and other internet service providers to block domains infringing on Multichoice networks.
All eyes are now set on the Court of Appeal, which has set the ruling on the stay application for March 19 2021. In November 2020, the High Court issued a landmark ruling that required Safaricom Plc and Jamii Telkom Limited to pull down and disable 141 sites that were cited for infringing on Multichoice Kenya s copyright. ....

MultiChoice backs SABC call for home levy to support ailing broadcaster

MultiChoice, the pay-TV company that operates SA’s largest direct broadcast satellite service, DStv, has thrown its weight behind proposals by the SABC to introduce a public broadcasting household levy to support the ailing state-owned enterprise.
If implemented, such a levy will affect all homes whether they own a TV set or not, putting more pressure on financially strained households whose incomes have been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
