Lakehead researchers study COVID-19 mental health impact

THUNDER BAY  Researchers at Lakehead University will use a grant from Bell Let s Talk to study how COVID-19 has affected physical activity and the mental health of post-secondary students. Faculty members Ian Newhouse and Erin Pearson of the School of Kinesiology are leading the project. According to a news release from LU, COVID-19 restrictions have negatively impacted the frequency and modes of physical activity that students engage in. While a strong link has been established between mental health and physical activity, the question of how to best promote physical activity during a pandemic needs further exploration, Newhouse said. The study is aimed at identifying strategies that can be used to develop future programming at Lakehead.

Event: Mental Health First Aid Standard - Virtual - ReachFM: Peace Country s hub for local and Christian news, and adult contemporary Christian programming

Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at 7:30AM The Mental Health Commission of Canada reports that one in every five Canadians experiences a mental health problem within a given year. While we often know a lot about physical illness, there tends to be less knowledge about mental health or substance use problems. This lack of understanding leads to fear and negative attitudes towards individuals living with these problems. It prevents people from seeking help for themselves and from providing appropriate support to people around them. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the support provided to a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis. This virtual course consists of 1 self directed online module and 2 (3hr) facilitator led sessions. Upon completion participants will received a certificate of completion on behalf of MHFA and the Mental Health Commission of Canada
