Painsomnia is a medical condition where people go to bed in relative comfort but as they sleep their pain builds and wakes them up.
The number affected is unclear, but a 2014 study in the Journal of Pain found that up to 88 per cent of those living with chronic pain have difficulty sleeping, while 50 per cent of insomniacs suffer from chronic pain.

Couldn’t most of us do with a hug at the moment? Indeed, one of the things that many people have found hardest about the pandemic is the reduction, or even complete absence, of physical contact with loved ones outside of their bubble. Lucky me then, having three children for cuddles on tap.
 Well – perhaps not quite on tap. Not when one of them is a 13-year-old male who is a mass of arms, legs and attitude.
 You’d have been hard-pressed to find a more cuddlesome chap when he was little, especially where I was concerned. Naturally, as he grew, I became more circumspect about being physically affectionate with him in public – the big hug we once would have had at drop-off became more of a squeeze of the shoulder, or a ruffle of the hair. ....
