BARRIE, ONT. Motorists in the City of Barrie will have to pack their patience with multiple construction projects planned for this summer. Anne Street Bridge The Ministry of Transportation is replacing the Anne Street bridge over Highway 400. Crews will demo the bridge and replace it with a larger structure to improve traffic flow and widen sidewalks for pedestrians. The ministry plans to improve the intersections at Anne and Edgehill and Anne and Donald streets. Edgehill Drive to Donald Street will be closed for the construction that is expected to be done in fall 2022. Traffic will be rerouted during this time, and transit routes 5 and 8 will be modified. The city and ministry will offer a free pedestrian shuttle with stops on either side of the bridge. ....

Jan. 3 BELLINGHAM A temporary winter shelter for the homeless in the parking lot of Frank Geri Softball Fields on Puget Street has opened, and 10 people are living there so far, according to the Bellingham nonprofit that is operating the site. Known as Swift Haven, the encampment opened Saturday, Dec. 26. The first residents are living in tents, which will soon be replaced by tiny homes that are expected to arrive at the site starting the week of Jan. 4. Another 18 people are waiting to be cleared by the Bellingham Police Department, which will check for warrants a normal process, said Doug Gustafson, chairman of HomesNOW!, operator of Swift Haven. ....
A string of several house fires in south Baltimore early Christmas morning is under investigation.Firefighters were called around 1:30 a.m. Friday to Hinsdale Drive for a fire at a house that was occupied. No injuries were reported, but the rowhome was gutted and destroyed. The fire caused intense damage to both floors while debris was left scattered on the front lawn.Firefighters were then called around 3:15 a.m. to Harman Avenue and Puget Street for another fire, this time, at a vacant house.Then, just before 4:30 a.m., a third fire broke out on Harriet Avenue, and on that same block, there was a fourth fire about an hour later. Both of those fires broke out at vacant homes.There was also a fifth house fire being investigated in east Baltimore.The cause of all the fires remains under investigation. There s no immediate word on whether any of the fires were connected. ....
