Source: New Zealand Police (District News) Police want to acknowledge the tireless contribution and massive response of volunteers and members of the public who have helped search recently for two Northland men, who went missing in separate incidents. The search for 72-year-old Whangārei man Brian Bench was the largest search operation conducted in the Northland area in the last 17 years. (see note) During the five-day search, helicopters and sniffer dogs were brought in to help and volunteers scoured backyards, streets and waterways. Mr Bench, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, was discovered by Police staff off a walking track on Mount Parihaka and sadly, despite their efforts, he passed away at the scene. ....

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has confirmed a fatality in an early morning worksite accident at a Union County Worksite. According to a preliminary investigation, emergency responders rushed to the 4900 block of Tremley Point Road after an excavator operated by one person somehow fell into the waters of the Tremley Point Reach just before 8:25 a.m. Officials from the NJ State Police Dive and Water Rescue Unit confirmed with RLS Media that they were on the scene assisting in the operation to rescue the unidentified worker from about 6ft of water. OSHA officials said the victim was pronounced dead a short time after being removed from the water and the investigation is active and ongoing. ....

The contributions by Godwin Perera, Laksman Ratnapala, A. J. Perera, Sumith de Silva and Manel Fonseka have rekindled in me memories of the many public figures of the Burgher community, particularly police officers at the time I joined the police in the late fifties of the last century. The mix-up in photos of Col. F. C. de Saram and Canon R. S. de Saram and the references to Burgher bits were indeed amusing. When I joined the police, the induction process of new entrants to gazetted rank, required probationary ASPs to be introduced by appointment to senior public officers including the Governor General, Prime Minister, Chief Justice, Attorney General etc. As such, with my batchmates before long I was able to meet several amiable public servants of the Burgher community. ....
