Joshua Schmidt POCAHONTAS An Algona man accused of shooting a short-barreled shotgun at another person in Rolfe will spend the next four years on probation after receiving a 10-year suspended prison sentence. District Court Judge Christopher Polking handed down the sentence at the Pocahontas County Courthouse on Monday after defendant Joshua J. Schmidt pleaded guilty to going armed with intent, a Class D felony, and possession of a short-barreled shotgun, a Class D felony. Schmidt was also sentenced for a third offense after pleading guilty to escape from custody, a Class D felony. For the two charges stemming from the shooting, Schmidt received two suspended five-year prison sentences. He must serve two years of probation for each, to be served concurrently. He will have to live in a residential correctional facility for 180 days. His $2,472.50 in fines were also suspended. ....
A Boone man turned himself in to Storm Lake authorities Sunday following an investigation into a Jan. 31 incident. Officers were called to Kings Pointe Resort on that date when four males, ages 16 to 20, disputed room charges and told hotel staff they had been left at the resort by an elderly man. It is alleged that 69-year-old Lewis Ray Thompson had picked up the males the day before in the Fort Dodge area and drove them to Kings Pointe Resort. The males told authorities that after their arrival, Thompson offered to pay for the hotel room and alcohol in exchange for sex from the 16-year-old male. Police allege that after the offer was rejected, Thompson left the males behind. Thompson was booked into the Buena Vista County jail on charges of prostitution, a class D felony, and supplying alcohol to a minor, a serious misdemeanor. He was released after paying a $6,000 bond. [email protected] POCAHONTAS An Algona man charged with attempted murder stemming from a September Rolfe shooting will plead guilty to less serious crimes, according to plea agreements filed earlier this month. Joshua Schmidt, 18, will plead guilty to going armed with intent and possession of a short-barreled shotgun, class D felonies. Previously, he was charged with those two offenses in addition to attempted murder and assault while displaying or using a dangerous weapon. In exchange for his plea, he will receive an indeterminate prison term of up to five years for each of the two charges and a fine between $1,025 and $10,245. It’s unclear from the agreement whether the terms would be served concurrently or consecutively. ....
POCAHONTAS A 19-year-old woman is dead following a single-vehicle crash in rural Pocahontas County on Saturday. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Rebecca Hansen, 19, of Pocahontas, was driving a 2006 Pontiac Torrent eastbound on Highway 3 about 10 miles west of Pocahontas around 2:23 p.m. on Saturday. The State Patrol’s report said that Hansen had lost control of her vehicle and entered the north ditch, where the vehicle rolled. Hansen was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected. She died at the scene. The accident remains under investigation. The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office, Pocahontas Police Department, Fonda Police Department, Pocahontas Fire and EMS, and Iowa Department of Natural Resources. ....

The Iowa State Patrol was called to the scene on Highway 3 around 10 miles west of Pocahontas shortly before three o’clock when responding units determined an SUV was eastbound when the driver, 19-year-old Rebecca Hansen, lost control, entered the ditch and rolled. Hansen was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle. She was taken to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries. ....
