They Put Up a Parking Lot

What we’re getting
The land now known as the Park Blocks and Butterfly Lot was first donated in 1856 by the Skinner and Mulligan families, Eugene pioneers who wanted to create a unifying public square for the new community.
Later on, the square was divided into four blocks, with the two north blocks being used for a city hall, county jail and courthouse, and the two south blocks being used for a park. Over the years, the Eugene community moved away from the town square and City Hall moved to the old Eugene High School building at 11th Avenue and Willamette Street.  ....

I’m taking this opportunity to answer a few reader questions from the past couple of weeks.
One reader found fault with a recent photograph we carried in the main news section of The Oregonian, showing the aftermath of last weekend’s storm.
“(Your photo) showed a child and an adult appearing to be crawling underneath a huge downed tree. You may call me an alarmist but NO ONE should ever go near a downed tree let alone go underneath one. The photo gives one to think that this is a fun activity and not a potentially dangerous or even deadly activity. I ask that you be more safety conscious when publishing photos and include warnings when safety is questionable.” ....
