A deli on New Dorp Lane was in business for only a few weeks when it was burglarized overnight, according to a source from the store. He explained that the store opened during the first week in January after many months of preparation. “I like to think we’re extremely good with our customers so we don’t have any disgruntled employees or customers or anyone that would dislike us,” the source said. “We just started. We treat everyone like gold. We plan on doing that a year from now, two years from now. It just seems so random to us.” ....

Some owners say the group brought a boost to the area’s businesses in its three-year existence. And the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation (SIEDC) would like to see more throughout the borough. “When COVID is behind us, the businesses within the BIDs will bounce back much quicker than without,” said SIEDC president and CEO Cesar J. The infamous “Blizzard of 1996” deposited almost 30 inches of snow on Staten Island, shutting down businesses, leaving people stranded in homes and cars and crippling transportation throughout the borough. The winter of 1996 didn’t end with the blizzard. By season’s end, over 75.6 inches of snow fell, far exceeding the previous record of 63.2 set in the winter of 1947-1948. It hit NYC on the morning of January 7, 1996 and lasted for 37 hours, dropping on average 2 inches of snow per hour. Residents were told to stay home and await the passing of the storm; only police, fire department and hospital personnel reported to work according to NYCdata. ....

In days gone by, it was hard to tell | From the editor Updated Dec 27, 2020; Posted Dec 27, 2020 Staten Island’s east shore was once the go-to destination in the summer months. South, Midland and New Dorp beaches, along with with other smaller communities along the shores, attracted sunbathers and beach lovers in the early 1800s. Land along the shorelines of Midland and South beaches was used to build hotels, amusement attractions, restaurants, dance pavilions and shooting galleries to entertain the massive crowds at the end of the beach day. Later, casinos with complete vaudeville shows cropped up, and soon there were few vacancies along the boardwalk. Boats began running to South Beach from the Whitehall Street slip in Manhattan in 1890, and later lines came from Brooklyn. In 1896, Midland Beach opened a bustling boardwalk resort. South Beach benefited from this, as a seasonal trolley line ran between the two beaches, starting in 190 ....
