A 3-month-old baby, La Mello Smith, was killed by a single gunshot wound after a police chase involving his father on Monday.
Dozens of police vehicles were pursuing Eric Derell Smith from Baton Rouge in the United States on Monday, 3 May, after he allegedly killed two people earlier that day. The chase eventually came to a tragic end, on the median of the highway, when police opened fire. Both Smith and his 3-month-old baby, who was in the car, were fatally wounded.

The three-month-old shot Monday during a gunfight in Mississippi between a man on the run for killing two people in Baker and the authorities pursuing him died of a single bullet wound, local television station WLOX reported Wednesday.
The infant, identified as La’Mello Parker, was shot once and died of the resulting injuries, Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer told WLOX.
The coroner did not say whether that shot was fired at close range. That information will be included in the autopsy report, which will be sent to investigators and the district attorney’s office, according to WLOX. ....

Louisiana State Police knew a baby was in a car that troopers chased from Slidell into Mississippi on May 3, the agency said. That chase ended in the deaths of the fleeing car’s driver and his nearly 4-month-old son, after Mississippi law enforcement officers opened fire.
State Police spokesman Dustin Dwight told WDSU on Thursday that troopers notified Mississippi authorities, who took over the chase across the state line, that a child was in the car with the fleeing suspect. A suspect in a double homicide in Louisiana who authorities say kidnapped his infant son on Monday allegedly used the baby as a human shield during a deadly gun battle with police in Mississippi.
Eric Derell Smith, 30, was shot and killed by officers in Biloxi following a 130-mile chase that spanned two states. His three-month-old son, La Mello Parker, died at a hospital hours later from what officials have described as injuries sustained during the shootout.
A Harrison County sheriff’s deputy and a Biloxi police officer have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation into the shooting. ....
