SBI Life declines 2% on strong volumes

SBI Life Insurance Company fell 2.45% to Rs 916.95 amid strong volumes.On the BSE, 5.18 crore shares were traded in the counter so far compared with average daily volumes of 85,648 shares in the past one quarter.
On NSE, 1.40 crore shares were traded on the counter so far compared to average daily volume of 21.18 lakh shares in the past one quarter.
Shares of life insurance company hit a high of Rs 933.8 and a low of Rs 901.2 so far during the day.
Meanwhile, the media reported that BNP Paribas Cardif is looking to sell its stake in SBI Life Insurance. As of 31 December 2020, BNP Cardif, classified as promoter group, held 5.2% stake in SBI Life. ....

BNP chief Khaleda may get 6-month extension to stay out of jail

The law ministry has recommended extending a freeze on the jail sentences of BNP chief Khaleda Zia by six months in two corruption cases.

A recommendation has been sent out to the home ministry, the law ministry said in a statement on Monday.
After attending a ceremony of the finance ministry on Monday, Law Minister Anisul Huq said: “The recommendation we’ve forwarded today is to suspend her sentence and extend her term for another six months just as before.”
The government-imposed two conditions remain in effect: Khaleda will not be able to travel abroad and must receive treatment at home. Anisul said the extension was recommended conditionally. ....

His remarks came amid growing calls from leftist student organisations for the repeal of the Digital Security Act following the arrest and subsequent death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed in jail in a case under the act.
The senior BNP leader said Mushtaq was imprisoned ‘simply because of writing something’ while cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore was in jail ‘just because of drawing cartoons’.
“If you open up today’s newspaper you’ll see that according to a statement Kishore gave after getting out of jail, inhuman torture is being carried out by a group within the government to erase. whoever is opposing the government,” Fakhrul said in a meeting on Saturday. ....

The Anti-Corruption Commission has quizzed Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, a member of the BNP’s Standing Committee, for two hours over allegations of accumulating “illegal wealth”.

Investigation Officer Selina Akhter interrogated Khosru from 10.30 am to 12.20 pm on Monday, as he arrived at the commission two and a half years after being summoned.

After contesting in the ongoing municipal polls, the BNP has decided not to nominate candidates in the upcoming union council elections.

Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the decision by the party’s National Standing Committee on Sunday, citing “continued biasness of the authorities in elections”.
The BNP boycotted the 2014 parliamentary polls and alleged vote rigging and intimidation in the 2018 general election, but it continued contesting in elections to the local government bodies with its paddy sheaf symbol.
